14 May Housebuilders told they can keep sites open till 9pm
Housebuilders will be able to keep construction sites open until at least 9pm, six days a week in residential areas in order to keep building during the coronavirus pandemic.
Housing secretary Robert Jenrick issued a ministerial statement yesterday which instructed local authorities to permit requests to extend site opening hours – usually controlled by planning permissions – unless there are “very compelling reasons” to reject them.
The Housing Secretary said extending the hours for construction would take pressure off the transport system and improve social distancing.
The move comes after Boris Johnson urged everyone in sectors of the economy that are allowed to be open to go back to work.
Jenrick has also announced that the property market will be allowed to resume for the first time since March 26.
Estate agents, surveyors and conveyancers have been told they can reopen – although they are urged to make use of ‘virtual viewings’ online wherever possible.
Removal men have been issued with new safety guidance, including being told to wear gloves and face masks.
